LWHS Online Newsletter
Our Home and Heritage
Issue #5, Sept. 2003

Opening words from the president...

The L-WHS has received 501 (C) (3) status from the Internal Revenue Service This status not only gives our Society the opportunity to apply for more grants but also allows corporations to match their employees' contributions to the L-WHS. We ask all L-WHS members to check to see if their employer will match contributions.

PLEASE BEAR WITH US. KEEP CHECKING on THE STATUS OF OUR WEB SITE: l-whs.com. We are making every effort to get it updated and functioning.

Minutes from this month's meeting
We need funding. We encourage every member to consider helping to fund your Historical Society's Projects as your means allow. In particular, we ask those members who, because of distance or scheduling demands, cannot give their time and talents directly, to consider helping to sponsor the Society's projects.

Historical Marker- Monument Project ($10,000+) We have received donations from Steve Suchta ($25) - John Yarnish ($25) - Joseph P. Kondis ($250) - a memorial sponsorship ($250) for Chester Beres from the Phyllis Beres Family and a grant ($3500) from the Pa. Rural Arts Alliance. Thanks!! Other projects for which we need funding: Office/Display Refurbishing Project ($6000) - Furniture Project ($4500) - Athletic Photo/Trophy Project ($1000).

Programs & Events
CALLING OUR MOST SENIOR CITIZENS - We are inviting all residents and former residents of Washington Township and Lilly Borough, born before 1917, to join us for a town meeting on Sunday afternoon, November 9, 2003 from 2:00 to 4:00pm at the Lilly Borough Building. We hope to tat the untold natural resource of our most senior citizens' collective memories of the "good (and sometimes not so good) olde days," through informal discussions of what it was like growing up during the early years of the last century. We will feature a Dessert Social to bolster the seniors' stamina.

We invite a family member or friend to accompany the senior where assistance is needed. We will provide transportation where needed.

We ask seniors to bring along any old photos of the community's people, buildings, events, etc. (we particularly need photos of the township's schools), and any mementoes of the community's businesses, social clubs (e.g. PNA and particularly old Victor Emmanual III Italian Club and the old VFW), service associations (e.g. fire co.) churches schools etc. (calendars - advertisements - invoices etc.) We will accept donations of the photos or mementoes - or make copies of them and return them at once.

Research
Dear member of L-WHS: We need your Time - Talent - Treasure. We need volunteers to help with research for the community's history book and help prepare for the community's Bicentennial Celebration in 2006; to help with Grant Writing and Fund Raising; to share computer, Photography, graphic and artistic skills; & to help with clerical work, maintenance, carpentry, repair and cleaning. We need access to your historical community photographs. Please let us know if you can volunteer or supply us with any photographs or other materials.

Museum
WE NEED PHOTOS SHOWING THE HISTORICAL HERITAGE OF OUR COMMUNITY. We, of course, like old photos but they need not be ancient. Photos of street scenes, events, parades, Businesses, Mines, School and Sporting Events etc. from the 1940's -50's-60's-70's and 80's are needed for future Calendars and the History Book. In particular, we need photos of the Washington Township Schools (With or without students) Brown, Riley, Behe, Stromer, Dutchtown, Moshannon, etc. and any recollections associated them. We only just need to borrow the photos to copy them and then we will return them immediately.

Monuments & Markers
The L-WHS is organizing the Italian Businesses, Societies and Associations of the area to fund a memorial for the Twenty- Nine Emigrant Italian Railroad Workers who were victims of the holocaust in Lilly in November,1903 and are buried in a common grave in St Brigid's Cemetery. In the Spring of 2004, your society will install a bronze plaque in a Railroad Memorial Park near the bridge in the center of town.

The L-WHS is working with Our Lady of The Alleghenies Catholic Church to mark the 100th anniversary of this holocaust. The Parish is installing a memorial to mark the mass grave in St. Bridid's Cemetery. A special memorial mass will be celebrated Sunday November 2, 2003, at 8:00 am in our Lady of the Alleghenies Chapel. The Knights of Columbus Honor Guard will be in attendance and the Vox Nova Choir from Mount Aloysius College will offer a musical program beginning at 7:45 am. After the mass, the Knights of Columbus will host a communion breakfast in the Church Hall, where the memorials will be blessed and a program presented. Tickets for the breakfast are $6.00 and are available from the Knights and at Gall's Insurance Agency-Main Street-Lilly. Breakfast Tickets must be purchased by Monday, October 27, 2003.

Through the efforts of Scott Steberger, the L-WHS has been awarded a grant of $3,500 from the Pennsylvania Rural Arts Alliance to be applied toward the $8,500 Memorial honoring the NOBILITY OF THE LABORER to be erected in the center of town in 2004. We ask that an individual, family, or business consider funding the $5,000 balance-possibly in memory of a loved one. We, of course, welcome donations-of any amount- to The Memorial Projects Fund (That will be used to fund future projects.)
