Greetings Members of the Lilly-Washington Historical Society (L-WHS):
I never never thought I would be repeating this apology again in late 2007 – but here it is:
SORRY- AGAIN
With sincere apologies - I, Jim Salony -the Editor, take full responsibility for the fact that Our History Book – THE SPIRIT OF A COMMUNITY –
WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE for Christmas 2007.
The text of the History Book has been 96% complete for a year now. The formatting –editing of photos and placement of photos-maps-tables-and other illustrative material – is what is taking the time. The delay is totally caused by my inability to get the properly skilled people with enough time to do the formatting (which not only involves editing the photos but also placing the illustrative material and adopting the text to accommodate the illustrative material).
Early in 2007 I lost my chief formatter, and it was not until late spring, that I was able to secure another volunteer who gave as much time as was possible with a busy family life. (I even tried a highly recommended paid professional formatter who did not prove satisfactory.) With the resumption of the school year, the new volunteer’s time has become more restrictive until the end of October when we should be back to fuller production. In the meantime I have secured 2 additional formatters who can each give some part-time help. We have well over half The Book
formatted and with all hands on board we intend to have Our History Book published as early as possible in 2008. And believe me, no one would like to see this book finished more than JMS.
But we are not going to rush to meet an arbitrary deadline and publish a book that would be less than the best product we are capable of producing. This History Book is a “once-in-202-year” project, and we want it to do the Spirit of Our Community proud. We initially promised you a 250 page History Book – we are now approaching 550 pages – of quality material. Thank you for your patience, support, and understanding.
Please address any disapprobations, vents, tirades, threats, complaints, or demands for refunds directly to me, Jim Salony at lilly@l-whs.com or 417 Cleveland Street-Lilly PA 15938.
This Newsletter is being sent to all current members of the L-WHS and anyone else who has ordered a History Book. On page 5 there is a form for address verification for all those who ordered a History Book(s) or had one ordered for them as a gift. Please return the form promptly with any correction of address so that when the History Books are published we can mail them out to those that have requested mailing and mail out notifications to those who have arranged to pick up the books in Lilly. If we do not receive a correction we will assume the address is correct.
AND NOW TO THE BETTER NEWS: On Saturday August 18, 2007 the Lilly Washington Historical Society dedicated the sixth major monument in a series of eight. This monument, located on the grounds of the Lilly Area Ambulance Association on Main Street, honors the local Volunteers whose selflessness, over the years, has benefited Our Community.
The Lilly Area Ambulance Association was the major sponsor of the Volunteer Monument ($4,000). The Pennsylvania Rural Arts Commission gave us a grant of almost $2,000, over $1,500 was raised from $5 contribution given by each of those attending Our Bicentennial Wrap Party in February of 2007, and small individual contributions made up the balance.
Steve Barlick provided the main plaque’s powerful design - a pyramid of volunteers with outreached hands helping each other. Scott Steberger and Michael Allison fabricated the
artistic plaque.
The dedication plaque reads:
THE VOLUNTEER
As a Member of a company, an association, a church, an auxiliary,a council, a society, a club, a board
As a Coach, an Advisor, a Leader, a Friend, a Neighbor, a Good Samaritan
As a Caretaker of Field and Flower
TO ALL THOSE WHO GAVE FREELY OF THEIR TIME, TALENT, AND TREASURE
TO BETTER OUR COMMUNITY AND ENRICH THE LIVES OF OUR CITIZENS
We dedicate this monument in acknowledgement of
VOLUNTEERISM
THE SHARED VIRTUE THAT HAS ALLOWED OUR COMMUNITY TO PERDURE
MMVII

The dedication of the Volunteer Monument was followed by an afternoon of fun and games at the War Memorial Field as the Bicentennial Committed sponsored a combination of Field Day (which had been cancelled by rain for the Labor Day Homecoming Celebration of 2006) and Children’s Day (that had been such a success in 2006). Consideration is being given of making this an annual celebration to be called Family Day.
The remaining two monuments in the series are now being planned and funding is needed.
The next monument to be erected will be one memorializing the Ku Klux Klan Riot of 1924. This event brought Lilly nationwide notoriety and marked the beginning of the end of the Klan’s march to dominate the North Eastern Section of our country. The pictorial plaque has been funded half from the donation of Michael Allison, the artist, and half from a Pennsylvania Rural Arts grant. We need an additional $6, 000 to pay for the “story” plaque and for the construction and landscaping of the underlying monument structure. We ask any individual, family, group, or organization willing to be the sponsor of this marker of an important milestone in the History of Our Community to please contact Jim Salony at 814-886-7282 or at our web site www.l-whs.com or at L-WHS - 417 Cleveland Street - Lilly PA 15938.We plan to dedicate this monument on April 5, 2008 – the 84th anniversary of the riot.
The last monument in the series will be a life size “bronze” statue of a coal miner and a system of plaques or bricks to memorialize individual miners. Cost about $25,000 ! HELP !!

VOLUNTEERISM
As mentioned earlier we have just dedicated The Volunteer Monument that memorializes the vital role that the volunteer has played in building, preserving, and ennobling Our Community. For our Bicentennial Projects, the volunteers came out of the woodwork and were largely responsible for the success of our celebration. But when the flash of 2006 faded, so did our cadre of volunteers.
Today the L-WHS still has wonderful, dedicated volunteers who give countless hours and days to help carry out Our Projects, and without whose help we would have been able to accomplish little – and none of that on time. But all of these current volunteers share one, several, or all these factors that limit the time they can volunteer – such distractions as full time employment, family obligations, age, physical impairment, living at a distance from town, and volunteer involvement in many other organizations.
This has meant that with the day-to-day work on all our projects falling on fewer and fewer individuals such projects as the Heritage Room & the History Book fall behind schedule. We need more Volunteers
To be clear, additional volunteers will not necessarily decrease the number of hours the current volunteers willingly devote to the Historical Society’s projects, but having more volunteers to handle the day-to-day minutia (that must be attended to on an ongoing basis if the long range big projects are going to be successful) will allow the current volunteers to devote more of their time and talents to the long-range planning for and implementation of the larger projects.
We need more volunteers who are willing to give of their TIME & TALENT to the projects of the Historical Society. We especially need volunteers with particular skills: interviewing, writing, researching, typing, computer operations, photography, layout specialist for the History Book, the Calendars and other publications. WE ALSO NEED VOLUNTEERS WITH IDEAS – SHARE !
We need at least 3 volunteers to serve on the Historical Society’s Board of Directors. We really could use the wisdom and balance of some additional female Board Members.
We need at least 4 additional volunteers (husband and wife teams welcomed) to help us get the Heritage Room shaped up. Could really use a writer/typist to create the descriptive name cards for Museum items. And would be great to have a volunteer serve as Director/Coordinator of the Heritage Room.
We really need a volunteer (or team) who would assume full responsibility for the Membership Program –from recruiting new members, to recording change of address and membership status, to establishing and maintaining the Membership Plaques and the web site Membership Listings.
PLEASE GIVE SERIOUS CONSIDERATION TO VOLUNTEERING SOME OF YOUR TIME AND TALENT TO HELP YOUR HISTORICAL SOCIETY ACHIEVE ITS GOALS AND MEMORIALIZE THE AMAZING HISTORY OF OUR COMMUNITY. PLEASE CONTACT JIM SALONY TO TALK OVER THE YOUR AREA OF INTEREST –886-7282 or lilly @ l-whs.com or L-WHS 417 Cleveland Street Lilly PA 15938
TREASURE – We ask all present and former residents of Our Community – even those who have shared their TIME & TALENT with us – to share with us some of your treasure. The Historical Society has many “needs” that we must satisfy if we are going to complete Our Projects successfully .There are a whole range of Price Tag$$$ on Our various “needs.” The sharing of Treasure is a way that those Sons and Daughters of Our Community who are living at a distance – and therefore are not able to volunteer time and talent – can help us successfully complete Our Projects. There are many people, who have their roots in Our Community, who have gone on to great $ucce$$ in the World. Many have already generously shared with us some of their bounty. If you are in a position and of a mind to help, please contact Jim Salony to tailor a sponsorship to your interests and budget.
