Greetings: Members of the Lilly-Washington Historical Society (L-WHS) &
ALL OTHER PRESENT AND FORMER RESIDENTS OF THE LILLY
AREA WHOM WE ENCOUIRAGE TO BECOME MEMBERS
STRAIGHT TALK
PLEASE
TAKE THE TIME TO READ THROUGH THIS ENTIRE NEWSLETTER
We want to avoid being told by local residents that they didn’t attend the major events of this Bicentennial Year because they knew nothing about them! – This is what we were told by several local residents in explaining ??? why they did not attend the Opening Founders Day Celebration on February 4th. Please review the enclosed 2006 Calendar !
To set the theme for this Newsletter we would like to quote from A Letter To The Editor of The Mainliner from Andrew Siedlarczyk, a member of the L-WHS from Maryland, who after a very complimentary review of all the elements of the Founders Day Program, and a recognition of the work of the more than 100 volunteers that it took to make the Program a success, went on to say two very important things – 1.“I would encourage both residents and former residents of Lilly and Washington Township to mark their calendars for the upcoming events that will continue the celebration throughout the year. 2. “Do your part to enrich the spirit of cooperation and pride already shown by many individuals, businesses, and social organizations.”
You can read the rest of Andrew’s letter and see the Program and related stories and photos concerning the Founders Day Celebration at: www.l-whs.com
- note – the “l” in l-whs is a lower case letter “L” and not the number “1” (one) -
We can successfully complete the long-range projects of the Lilly-Washington Historical Society and successfully stage the remaining events of Our Community’s Bicentennial Year only if you, the Sons and Daughters of Our Community, each “do your part.” We need each of you to give as much of your TIME – TALENT & TREASURE as you can to ensure the success of YOUR Historical Society’s and Bicentennial Committee’s Projects. (continued Page 3)
PLEASE – CHECK THE L-WHS MEMBERSHIIP LISTING ( If you are not now a member, join us in celebrating Our History – fill out a Membership Application Form.) If you are an Adult –Adult Sustaining – Household – Household Sustaining Member – please renew your Membership for 2006.

TIME & TALENT - We have wonderful, dedicated volunteers who have given countless hours and days to help carry out Our Projects, and without whose help we would have been able to accomplish little – and none of that on time. But all of these volunteers share one, several, or all these factors that limit the time they can volunteer - such minor distractions as full time employment, family obligations, age, physical impairment, living at a distance from town, and volunteer involvement in two to half-a-dozen other organizations.
This has meant that the day-to-day work on all the projects has fallen to three individuals – none of whom are complaining about the amount of time spent on the projects or seeking praise –but just to make clear that with me, the Society’s President, averaging more than 60 hours a week, Barry Walters averaging more than 40 hours a week, and Jack Barlick averaging over 25 hours a week, on the day-to day work, such projects as the Heritage Room & the History Book fall behind schedule. We need more Volunteers
To be clear, additional volunteers will not necessarily decrease the number of hours we three willingly devote to the Bicentennial Projects, but having more volunteers to handle the day-to-day minutia (that must be attended to on an ongoing basis if the long range big projects are going to be successful) will allow we three to apply our time and talents to the long-range planning for and implementation of the larger projects.
We need more volunteers who are willing to give of their TIME & TALENT to the
projects of the Historical Society and the Bicentennial Committee. We especially need volunteers with particular skills: interviewing, writing, researching, typing, computer operations, photography, layout specialist for the History Book, the Calendars and other publications.
Ron Muldoon is upgrading the Membership Program and Doodles George helps update the membership data but we really need a volunteer who would assume full responsibility for the Membership Program –from recruiting new members, to recording change of address and membership status, to establishing and maintaining the Membership Plaques and the web site Membership Listings.
We need a volunteer to “head-up” each of these areas and volunteers to serve on the respective committees:
l. The Bicentennial Jackpot Lottery to be drawn over the Labor Day Weekend
2. The Music for the Labor Day Weekend
3. The Athletic Contests that will be held at “Field Day” on the Labor Day Weekend
4. The Scarecrow Contest around Halloween
5. The Bicentennial Souvenir Selection and Sales
6. Sales of L-WHS Products at the various Bicentennial Events
(PLEASE – Complete the enclosed TIME-TALENT VOLUNTEER Form)
MORE STRAIGHT TALK
TREASURE – We ask all present and former residents of Our Community – even those who have shared their TIME & TALENT with us – to share with us some of your treasure. The Historical Society and the Bicentennial Committee have many “needs” that we must satisfy if we are going to complete Our Projects successfully.
There are a whole range of Price Tag$$$ on Our various “needs.” The sharing of Treasure is a way that those Sons and Daughters of Our Community who are living at a distance – and therefore are not able to volunteer time and talent – can help us successfully complete Our Projects. There are many people, who have their roots in Our Community, who have gone on to great $ucce$$ in the World. Many have already generously shared with us some of their bounty – from Al Tranquillo’s early donation that outfitted our office with all the components of a computer system, to Patricia and Cathy Rodgers’ underwriting of The Heartstrings at the Founders Day Program, and to all the many donations in between (which we have acknowledged (or plan to acknowledge) in publications &/or by plaques).
We appeal directly to you $ucce$$ful Sons and Daughters (& Grandsons and Granddaughters) of Our Community to seriously consider funding –in whole or in large part - one of these Major Bicentennial Projects:
l. Monument to acknowledge Plane #4 of the Allegheny Portage Railroad – built in
the early 1830s from the top of the Level to the Intersection of Portage and
Cleveland Street (where the Monument will be dedicated over the Labor Day
Weekend). The APRR was the major influence in establishing the Original
Washington Township as a Viable Community. $5000
2. 50 “WELCOME TO OUR COMMUNITY” Bicentennial Banners and mounting
brackets. $5,000
3. Ground “Fireworks” for Our Homecoming Weekend over Labor Day
$3000 to $5,000
4. Music for “Field Day” on Labor Day – Saturday - $1,000
5. Music for Homecoming – Labor Day – Sunday - $800
6. Murals on walls near Heritage Square (Bank Corner Intersection) - $500
Note: To those who enjoyed the “Slide Show” Power Point Presentation at the Founders Day Program – We used borrowed equipment. We need:
7. A Power Point Projector - $1,200
8. An Enhanced Memory Capacity/High Speed / Lap-Top Computer for
Power Point Presentation - $1200 (We certainly could use the donation of a
used Lap-Top of the indicated high quality.)

L-WHS HISTORY BOOK ORDER FORM
The L-WHS will publish The Spirit of a Community - The Two Hundred Year History of our Community – from the establishment of Dundee (the beginning of our Community) in 1806, through the establishment of Washington Township in 1831, through the establishment of Lilly Borough in 1883, and on through to 2006.
The History Book will consist of 300+ (NOW 400+) 8 ½” X 11” pages, replete with copies of maps and documents, and rich in photos; all bound in an embossed hard cover. 1000 copies are being ordered.
For the six weeks of full time work necessary to put the Founders Day program together, the History Book had to be put on the back burner. Sorry – but there are only so many hours a day. But now back to work of the History Book with intentions to have it published by mid-2006. We want The History Book to be the best we can produce, and if it takes more time, we would rather have it better than sooner.
History Books will cost $32.00 (tax included) for books picked up at Gall’s Insurance Agency – Main Street – Lilly. The $32 (+ $5.00 postage and handling per book to be mailed -$37) price will hold until production begins. (History Books ordered after production begins will cost $42.00 (tax included) for books picked up in Lilly + ($5.00 postage and handling for each book to be mailed.)
As a reward for your patience, we plan to give you at least 100 more pages in the History Book than the 300 pages promised, and for the same $32 price.
