WAR MEMORIAL DINNER

Approximately 50 residents attended the annual War Memorial Banquet held at Our Lady of the Alleghenies Church hall on Saturday, May 24th. Hugh Conrad gave a very interesting talk on the founding and progress of the War Memorial Association and its efforts to both honor those lost in past wars and provide a sports facility for the surrounding community.

The Association then honored two residents for their dedication and work for the group in the 1990’s. Robert Monahan presented a plaque to Fred Behe on

behalf of the association. Russell Proudfit, the other honoree was unable to attend.

POSTER CONTEST

The Lilly Area Ambulance Association announced the winners of a recent safety poster contest held at the Penn Cambria Lilly Elementary. The 3rd grade classes of Mrs. Baker, Nileski and Kuntz participated. The winners were Miranda Cessna, Jodyn Tiracave and Nathan Gawel. Each received a bike helmet for their winning entry. Rick is an honor student and is also pursing his Eagle Scout rating.

While at the Keystate program he will get to meet with Senators and Representatives and both observe and learn the functions of government.

PRE-SCHOOL

I was able to attend my grandson Connor Mento’s graduation from pre-school at the Children’s Express in Cresson on Friday the 23rd.He enjoys singing and dancing and fit right in to the activities. Though a little stage shy in public he doesn’t give his mom, Jackie, any rest at home. The children all looked very professional in their caps and gowns.

MEMORIAL DAY

On a warm, sunny Monday morning approximately 300 men, women and children attended the annual Memorial Day service at the War Memorial field. Reverend John Palko provided the Invocation and was followed by Joseph Podrasky who very eloquently sang the National Anthem.

Lilly Post 628 Commander, Pete Steberger, then presented the boys Americanism award to 8th grade student Matthew Cimino son of Laurie Sledbodnick and stepson of Rick Slebodnick Jr. Marcelle Cooney then presented the 8th grade Americanism girl award to Brianna Kearney the daughter of Eleanor and Keith Kearney.

Fred Kuntz, Lilly Legion financial officer, then presented two scholarships awarded by Post 628 to high school seniors for a recent essay contest. A 2000 dollar scholarship was presented to Bobby Glenn, son of Gary and Angie (Hufford) Glenn and a 1000 scholarship was then presented to Crippen Taylor the son of Ruth ( Filak) and Crippen L. Taylor . Both recipients read their essays to the assembly. Bobby will be attending St. Francis University and Crippen will be attending Mount Aloysius College.

Honors were then accorded to the memory of William Dibble, an 18 year old soldier who died during the Spanish/ American War 110 years ago and is buried in the Lillydale cemetery. He was the only casualty from Lilly during that war and this almost lost bit of history surfaced recently with information provided by Betty Green of Cresson.

As had been done at his funeral service 110 years ago, 6 little girls from the community then placed flowers at a rendition of his tombstone in his honor. The firing squad commanded by Paul Sweeny comprised of veterans of WW2, Korea, Vietnam and Persian Gulf era’s then provided the military rituals.
