CORRECTION
In last weeks column I incorrectly named the Charles Baker family as a recipient of the Lilly Knights of Columbus Family of the Year award. Dianne and Chuck Bishop was the family honored. So much for reading my own notes.
SYMPATHY
The community’s sympathy is extended to the family of Francis “Frank“ Filak, a WW2 veteran, who recently passed away.
BASEBALL
The Lilly Legion team is at .500 baseball having won 3 games and lost three so far. Meanwhile the Lilly Conrad Chiropractic/Lilly American Legion team improved to 4 wins and 2 losses. Brett Davison hit a home run that sports announcer Steve Suchta called “a major league homerun” as Bret sent it over the fence, a rare event at the Lilly field.
CARNIVAL
The Lilly firemen’s carnival will kick off on June 24th and run through the 28th at the firemen’s grounds on Railroad Street There will be music nightly and fun for all ages. Save on gas and enjoy a few evenings in town. Also, on June 25th the firemen will be hosting a tool sale at the hall all day on Main Street. I intend to look for a backyard windmill to replace one that wore out.
BRIDGES
A recent article in a daily paper announced improvements being done to the bridge that crosses Bear Rock run on the way to Lilly Coal in preparation for refuse hauling. This is good news for the Township and local road users.
Concern still exists about the WPA bridge on Piper Street and the pipe under the road at the head of Piper Street. These both need looked attention also. I don’t expect that pipe to last long under heavy weight truck traffic and residents all can recall the flooding that occurs if that tributary backs up.
BIRTHDAYS
Belated birthday greetings are extended to Pauline Hritz who celebrated her birthday on June 5th and John “Joe” Patterson who observed his on June 7th.
Today, June 12th, Dorothy Obester and Ashley Reed celebrate their birthdays as will Joan Cloherty, Fr. Ramzi Musallam and Douglas Stauski Jr. on the 13th followed by Mary Edna Filak, Marion Phillips and Stanley Skura on the 14th.
It will be party time for Shane Burkett, Kathleen Hooder and Traci Szpala on the 15th and then on the 16th Jean Bradley, Emma Claar, Gina Bender, Robert Courtot and Jessie Skura celebrate. We have all been enjoying the very warm days recently, it almost makes one forget about the past cold winter. It doesn’t look like any breaks will come in the high fuel costs so now is the time to consider adding insulation in your home if its needed. Most people are driving less; it is even noticeable on the local highways on weekends. If you’re not already car pooling for work it may be time to look into it.
Remember when there were bingo busses, skating busses, shirt factory busses and mill busses. the return of such transportation may be warranted.
