Saturday, April 12th is the first day of fishing season in Pennsylvania with trout being legal catches starting at 8 A.M. For those who do not want to travel far both Bens Creek and Noels Creek were stocked on April 7.In the early 1950’s my late grandfather, Steve Barlick, bought a fishing license for the first and only time to take brother Pat and I fishing at the Bens Creek dam. This was our introduction to the sport.
FARM PICTURES
Jim Salony has gotten a few farm pictures for the history book but is looking for more; some shots of residents working in the fields would be appreciated as well as pictures doing any tasks... Also some pictures of the pool room either when Grover Smith had it or later when it was run by Frank Waksmunski would be great. Inside shots are especially wanted.
Jim also would like the public to come forward with any history they may have of the early families that were in the Lilly area before 1900. Don’t assume we have your family. We have what has been collectible from stories, old newspapers, books, individuals etc. but a lot is missing. Also being sought are stories on family businesses here in town and the township since 1900. Call him at 886-7282
Keep an eye open for the date of the dedication this month of the memorial to the Klan riot here in Lilly in 1924. It is being built at the corner of Cleveland and Rail Road Street A recent story by the Associated Press stated that the Klan was intimidating the Catholic Irish and Italian immigrants and United Mine Workers members.. It failed to mention the many Slavish, Polish and Hungarian immigrants that were in the community in the early 1900’s. The Klan reportedly marched to the top of the level where many Polish families lived with the intended purpose of intimidating those residents before burning a cross in Pipers field.
